Akim -
The Exotic Hand

With it you can create rhythmic and novel patterns, incorporating it's graceful swoops and shallow, mound-like arches. Akim can be done using a pencil, pen, or calligraphy nib. It's a wonderful hand for scrapbooking, short quotes, and journal writing. Just the thing to add flair to your art!
In addition to learning the Akim hand, the student will make a small accordian book. If students have taken the Watercolor Miniature Masterpiece class, they can incorporate some of this work in their books.

colored pencils; colored pens; a few small rubber stamps/inks to decorate
book pages.)
A $10 materials
fee will be payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.
This will cover the cost of pens, papers, guidelines, handouts, white erasers,

The Artful
Choker
7 hrs.
- all levels
Instructor:
Sharilyn Miller Fee: $110
Students will learn how to make an artistic choker with wire, beads, found objects, etc., including many variations. Making clasps, cutting and shaping wire, filing, hammering techniques, coiling and spiraling wire, jump rings, eye pins, and bead reaming are included. Each student will complete one choker in class, and will come away with ideas for many others.
Supply List: Students are responsible for providing all of their own tools and supplies for my workshops. Due to traveling restrictions, etc., I am not able to provide extra tools, wire, or beads for students.
Must-Have
Supplies - Beads (see note on beads below); Chasing hammer &
plastic mallet or hammer; Flush cutters suitable for
cutting up
to 12-gauge wire; Wire: sterling silver and/or copper (see note on wire
below); Sharpie pen, notebook and pencil or pen,
and measuring
tape; Steel bench block or jeweler’s anvil, 2.5" x 2.5" or comparable;
Jewelry pliers (round-nose, extra-long round-nose,
chain-nose,
and flat-nose).
Wire - Wire
is available in various gauges, or diameters. When ordering wire, ask for
dead-soft; it’s the most malleable. The most common wire gauges that I
use to make jewelry are 14, 16, 18, 20, and 24. For the artful choker,
you will need 21-24" of 14-gauge
wire per necklace.
For wire wrapping (optional), you will need about 30" of 18-gauge
wire, and at least 90" of 20-gauge or 22-gauge wire. If you have some 24-gauge
twisted wire, bring that. Note: I suggest bringing more than
the minimum wire requirement to class
for practice.
Copper wire is very workable, makes nice jewelry, and is cost-effective,
so bring some copper wire to practice with and reserve your expensive silver
wire for final projects. Note: 12-gauge wire may be substituted
for 14-gauge, but make sure your beads have large holes!
Beads - For the artful choker, you will need one large focal bead plus several color-coordinating beads. You can make many wire-art jewelry pieces without beads, but it’s preferable to have some beads to work with, especially for adding color and texture to your jewelry. Make sure your beads have holes large enough to accommodate 14-gauge (or 12-gauge) wire. Also make sure the holes go all the way through your beads. Some bead manufacturers are rather careless when they drill holes in their beads, so you may need an electric bead reamer to fix the holes. Please do this prior to class if at all possible. I will be demonstrating bead reaming in class for those who need instruction. Bead caps and spacer beads are optional but highly recommended for designing nice chokers; make sure the holes will accommodate a 14-gauge wire (or 12-gauge if using that size to make the choker). You can also use beads made from polymer clay. By making your own polymer clay beads, you control the hole-size and other important factors. For more information, many books on polymer clay are available.
Clasp - I will demonstrate how to make your own clasp in class, but you are welcome to bring a commercially made clasp if you prefer.
Optional
Supplies - Electric bead reamer; Needle (jewelry) files;
British Standard wire gauge; Suede leather piece or fabric
placemat to
work on; #0000-steel wool, also known as "four-ought" (auto-supply stores)
& Sunshine polishing cloth.

A Bevy
of Books and Boxes
(7 hrs.
- intermediate)
Students will create three separate books in this day-long class.
Four-Needle Sewn Binding in Paper Wrappers
Although this 10th Century Chinese binding involves manipulating 4 needles simulataneously, it is a simple, quick, glueless, beautiful structure. We will make a chunky, multi-section book using text-weight paper. Brilliantly colored endsheets and wrappers constructed from Italian printed papers will complete the binding.
Patchwork Box
The only thing more fun than opening a box to reveal the secrets within is to actually make the box yourself. This sweet container -- built to hold and protect our 4-Needle Bindings -- is constructed of bookcloth wrapped around boards, and features a shaped cover flap and ribbon ties. The box unfolds, portfolio style, to show off its decorative linings. There is much potential for outrageous patterning inside this little charmer!
Hedi Kyle's Flag Book
When Hedi Kyle. bookbinder extraordinaire, invented this structure, she revolutionized the world of artists' books. With a single paper accordian and an abundance of ephemera -- postcards, photographs, letters, drawings, stamps, etc. -- the most magical of books will spring up on our workbenches. Please bring with you whatever it is that you collect -- make copies of your originals if you wish to preserve them.
Supplies
List: Bone folder, scissors, X-Acto knife, pencil, ruler, small
triangle, sewing needles #1 large-eyed darners, self healing cutting mat
or equivalent cutting surface, small plastic “deli-style” container with
lid for adhesives, small pad of newsprint, glue brushes (short handled
cheap paint hardware store brushes ½” and 2” wide will do),
wax paper, awls (slender to heftier), your own treasures (photos, postcards,
collages, odds and ends of decorative papers, buttons, ribbons, etc.),
and a spring divider (a great tool, optional but recommended)
available at Talas (212) 219-0770 or BookMakers International (301) 927-7787.
A materials
fee of $20 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of this class.
Fee
includes materials for all projects: text, cover weight paper, and
specialty papers, book cloth, glue and adhesive, linen thread, binder’s
board, etc.

Bookbinding
Extravaganza
(7 hrs.
- intermediate)
The student will come away from this day-long workshop with three wonderful books.
Accordian-Fold "Window" Album
How to fold
a perfect accordian is a major book-binding lesson in itself; all will
become pros in this workshop! As you learn how to link several pages
together to form an extended accordian, you will also learn how to make
a nifty mat which will allow you to change your artwork without damaging
either the artwork or the pages of the book. Unlike most accordian-fold
books, this album pulls out of a cloth-covered flat-back case. Please
bring with you six indentically-sized images (photos, collages, etc.) no
larger than 4" x 6".
The Buterfly Stitch: Two Versions
This project
is an introduction to one of the most versatile sewing systems in the bookbinding
vocabulary. It is also proof that simple is beautiful. In one
very un-flamboyent binding, a single gathering of paper is sewn into a
sturdy wrapper, which encloses the pamplet in an almost box-like environment.
A second, zanier interpretation is a dos-a-dos binding, in which two sections
-- independent of each other -- share a common cover. They're fun.
They're easy, and they're glue-less!

The Charm
Bracelet:
PMC &
the Byzantine Chain
(7 hrs. - beginner to intermediate)
Join us for a one-day workshop that combines an introduction to both Precious Metal Clay and Silver Chain Making. An innovative material, Precious Metal Clay consists of microscopic particles of silver suspended in an organic binder. When fired in a kiln, the binder burns away leaving a piece of fine silver. In this class the beginner will learn how to create silver charms that can be used on a bracelet or modified to create earrings. Experimenting with rolling and texturing tools, rubber stamps, custom and ready-made cutters, the PMC novice will acquire an excellent working knowledge of this ingenious material. During the kiln firing of their silver charms, students will immerse themselves in the craft of chain making by creating an elegant sterling silver Byzantine bracelet. Its intricate appearance belies the ease of construction, once you've learned a few simple tricks. At day's end you will have a handcrafted, silver bracelet with charms designed expressly to fit your wrist!
Supplies list: 2 pairs of jewelry pliers--either 2 chain nose, 2 bent nose, or 1 of each, favorite rubber stamps with design potential for silver charms. The instructor will have stamps from her own collection on hand for your use.
A material fee of $55 will be payable to the instructor at the beginning of the class. The materials fee includes: 1 ounce of PMC (enough for several charms), sterling silver for the chain, a work surface, cutting and rolling tools, file, slip and container, handouts of class notes, many shared materials and use of studio tools. Additional PMC will be available for purchase at $28 per ounce (discounted from retail $32.50) and a free firing service will be provided for 1 month following the class. Students are required to pay return postage.

Artistic
Earrings
(4 hrs. -
beginner to intermediate)
Instructor:
Sharilyn Miller Fee: $65
Students will learn how to make artistic earrings with wire and beads. Ear hooks, post earrings, clip-ons, coiling and spiraling wire, jump rings, cutting and shaping wire, filing, hammering techniques, and a wide variety of dangles for earrings will be included. Each student will make at least three pair of earrings during class, and will come away with ideas for many variations.
Supply List: Students are responsible for providing all of their own tools and supplies for my workshops. Due to traveling restrictions, etc., I am not able to provide extra tools, wire, or beads for students.
Must-Have
Supplies - Headpins; Earring posts or clip-ons; Jewelry
adhesive such as E6000; Beads (see note on beads below);
Notebook and
pencil or pen & measuring tape; Flush cutters suitable for cutting
up to 16-gauge wire; Wire: sterling silver and/or
copper (see
note on wire below); Jewelry pliers (round-nose, extra-long round-nose,
chain-nose, and flat-nose).
Note:
Colored wire is workable but not ideal; it is an option ONLY if you sincerely
cannot obtain real sterling-silver or copper wire prior to class (see resources,
below)
Wire - Wire is available in various gauges, or diameters. When ordering wire, ask for dead-soft; it’s the most malleable. The most common wire gauges that I use to make jewelry are 14, 16, 18, 20, and 24. For each pair of earrings, you will need approximately 10" of either 18-gauge OR 16-gauge sterling silver or copper wire and 40" of 24-gauge sterling silver or copper wire. I urge you to bring more than this minimum requirement in order to make several pair of earrings. If you have 24-gauge twisted wire, bring some (about 30" to 40") and we’ll make some gorgeous earrings. Copper wire is a cost-effective alternative to sterling silver, so bring some to practice with or to make finished earrings.
Headpins - You will need two headpins for each pair of earrings; each headpin should be 1-1/2" to 2" long or longer, depending on how many beads you want to dangle. I will also teach how to make your own headpins.
Beads - For each pair of earrings, you will need matching pairs of small- to medium-size beads with holes large enough to fit on your headpins. Bring a variety of beads of different sizes and textures in colors that coordinate well together. Sometimes even small seed beads may fit on your headpins. Bead caps are optional but recommended for designing nice earring drops; the holes must be large enough to fit on your headpins. You can also use beads made from polymer clay. By making your own polymer clay beads, you control the hole-size and other important factors. For more information, many books on polymer clay are available.
Posts & Clip-ons - We will be affixing either post or clip-on earring backs to your finished earrings at the end of class, so bring pairs of either type, depending on your preference. Bring a few extra, because you may be able to make more than one pair of earrings in class.
Optional Supplies - Needle (jewelry) files; Suede leather piece or fabric placemat to work on; #0000-steel wool, also known as "four-ought" (auto-supply stores) & Sunshine polishing cloth

Fantastic
Found Art Figures
(8 hrs. - all levels)
This 8-hour assemblage workshop will take place over two days and is open to students at all levels of experience. The emphasis will be on making assemblage with a figurative and narrative content, while learning the basics of composing found objects and miscellaneous detritus into a unique and personal work of art.
The class will discover how to develop a personal iconography in their assemblage as well as tackle the problem of securely attaching different media to the support. It is recommended the student bring a varied selection of materials from dollar store treasures such as plastic bugs, children’s toys and wooden shapes to household items such as safety pins, nuts and bolts, electrical doodads, keys, buckles, leather bits....anything with artistic potential. The class can pool their resources and Pamela will also provide some items. In addition there will be an electric scroll saw available as well as a Dremel tool, drills and sander. A found-art figure will be developed the first day, upon which a unique technique for creating a modern day “Rococo” embellishment will be learned. In addition, another assemblage will be started using found objects to assemble body parts and an environment into which the figure can be placed. Anything goes in this workshop....I have made figures out of materials as odd as a mousetrap, kitchen cutlery and camera parts!
There will be lots of lively discussion about developing a theme, infusing one’s personal expression into the art and exploring meaningful content. Bring your sense of humor and leave your inhibitions at home!
Supply List: acrylic paints; brushes; pastels (or any other surface embellishment of your choice); white glue (PVA, YES Glue optional); five minute epoxy glue; hot glue gun (optional); scissors; X-Acto knife; pliers; rubber brayer; wire; screws/nails/hooks etc. for attachment possibilities; a variety of favorite items with potential for assemblage (wooden pieces, wheels, doll parts, game pieces, beads, jewelry, metal bits, dollar store items, etc.); images from magazines; art calendars etc.; clay faces; water can; rags; sponge.

The Folded
Book Intensive
4 hrs - Easy
to intermediate (Folding experience helpful)
Patience required!
In the first half of the workshop you will make over ten versions of the “flutter book” and cover variations. These will be your working models for future creations and will help to warm you up to the second half of the workshop which is the “Blizzard Book” originally developed by Hedi Kyle.
The book you
will create requires no glue or sewing. The pages of the book are made
out of a single sheet of paper, folded into sixteen pocket pages. After
much experimentation with the cover, I found an origami structure that
was perfect for the book. The cover is made of a single square and folded
into a cover with pockets to fit the pages into. You will decorate
the paper first, then fold it.
Pages can
be embellished or pockets can be filled with treasures, images or poetry.

Order Out
of Chaos:
Finding
Yourself Amongst the Rubble
(8 hrs.
- all levels)
Assemblage is an art practiced by collectors of “stuff”; kitchen junk drawer items, yard sale treasures, dollar store bargains, clean out the basement finds. It is tailor made for personal expression from the very beginning. As the artist is collecting what interests her, she is revealing her own iconography. This workshop will focus on developing a personal visual expression where your work is like no one else’s.
This 8 hour workshop will take place over two days, allowing adequate time to create two finished assemblages. Students will learn practical aspects of attaching, gluing, wiring , and surface embellishment. The real focus, however, will be on self-expression. Certain elements appear over and over again in collage and assemblage; keys, game pieces, beads, chains, jewelry. The workshop ,while acknowledging the decorative qualities inherent in such items, will focus on how material can become prsonally meaningful and symbolic for the artist. We are interesting people with unique impressions and histories - let's incorporate them into our art!
Each student
will be given a starter project consisting of a wooden domino box and some
found objects to get them on their way, but expect to very soon branch
out with your own materials and ideas! There will be a small supply
of materials and tools on site as well as specialty items such as gold
and copper leaf which may be purchased from the instructor. I will also
provide an electric scroll saw, and Dremel tool, however, if you have the
latter please bring it along.
Supplies List: Bring a frame, box or support of some kind for your second assemblage (cigar box, old frame, small tin), and a variety of favorite found objects (even fabric if you fancy that). Recommended items: acrylic colors; brushes; pastels etc.; white glue; glue gun (optional); scissors; exacto knife; pliers; wire; screws; nails; hooks etc. ( for attachment possibilities). Water jar; rags; sponge.

Revel in
The Unexpected
(7 hrs.
- all levels)
This class will be a fun-filled session of idea sharing and technique demonstrations, while exploring the spontaneous nature of the collage art making process. The flexible nature of this workshop will afford each student an opportunity for one-on-one guidance, so come armed with your questions about collage and art making and we can help each other grow as artists!
A few of the
topics covered during this workshop will be:
- Facing
The Blank Canvas;
- a variety
of techniques, such as background surfaces, transferring color and B/W
copies, scraping, aging, mark making, working
with
color and more
- Manipulating
shape and design to create successful compostions
- Discussions
about artist block, staying out of a creative rut and other skills needed
for fulfilling art making
- Discovering
sources for tools and materials, ideas, tips and discussions
A small amount of collage items will be provided to create with, however please bring a few of your favorite things to work with for this class. Don't feel you have to bring tons of stuff, but a nice variety will help. Please remember we plan to work in a small scale. So think no larger than about 8" x 10".
Required
Supplies:
- Please bring about 3 tubes of your favorite acrylic
colors
- One 4-ounce jar or a 4oz. tube (or larger) of Titanium
White
- One 4-ounce jar (or larger) of Golden's Regular Gel
Matte
- Small tubes of Raw Umber and/or Yellow Ochre acrylic
paint
- 2 or 3 pre-stretched canvases about 5"x7" to 8"x10".
If you are taking a 2 or 3 day workshop, bring at least 4 canvases.
You can
also use canvas board in the same sizes; it's cheaper but not as durable
as the stretched canvas.
- Paint brushes about 2 or 3, any size. I like to have one
that's about 2 inches wide. Buy cheap brushes if you don't have
these already. I find that the 50cent house paint brushes from the
hardware store work great! Sponge brushes will also work
well too.
- Xacto knife or scissors
- A few Xerox and color copies of old family photos and
images you like
- If you plan to work in assemblage, bring a cigar box
or other box, to work in.
- A variety (about 10-15) of paper & small objects.
See list below for ideas.
- Bring a something to use as a water jar - old cup,
old jar or paper cup, etc.
- Some waxed paper or paper plates to use as a palette
for your paints
- Heat gun (only if you already have one). I will have
one for everyone to share.
- A roll of paper towels as the venue might not have
enough for everybody.
NOTE: When
I demonstrate, I will be using Golden's Acrylic Paints because I find them
superior to other paints. However, feel free to bring paints that you already
own. If you choose to buy Golden paints, before going to the store, I recommend
checking out the Golden web site to familiarize yourself with all the different
types of paints they offer. www.goldenpaints.com.
You can find
Golden's paints at your local Michael's Craft Store or art supply
store.
Suggested Supplies: The following items are NOT required and are listed here only to give you ideas of additional items you might like to bring to the workshop:
rubber stamps, wire, small scraps of wood, matchboxes, antique book pages, personal effects or memorabilia, old letters, documents, postcards, maps, stamps, small doll parts, fabrics, beads, buttons, keys, coins, eyeglasses or magnifying glasses, medical tools, interesting old pencils or pens, dominoes, dice, game pieces, playing cards, bones, feathers, leaves, eggshell, teeth, fossils, pressed flowers, screws, nails, washers, etc.
As you can see, the list could go on and on, use your imagination and see what else you can come up with!
If you have any questions about the supply list, please email me. This list is not set in stone. Please bring as many of the required items as you can -- it will make the workshop much more enjoyable for you.
